Janar's journey into programming began when he created a website for his school. His interest grew when he collaborated with a fellow student, who specialized in designing film posters, to build websites for clients. “This collaborative effort sparked my passion for both design and technical implementation,” says Janar.

The turning point came when an opportunity arose to work on a cinema website. "I traveled to Tallinn to attend meetings and eventually developed the first website for Coca-Cola Plaza, Estonia's first entertainment complex built specifically for cinemas. This project set the stage for my professional journey," Janar reflects on his path.

Catering to both cinema-goers and diners

In 2004, Janar joined MARKUS_ and has been a crucial part of the team ever since. With applications like ticket management, reporting, and profit calculations, MARKUS_' cinema software extends beyond ticket sales. "For over 10 years, we built this entire system with just a core team of software developers, including Priidu Paomets," he says.

Today, this is no longer the case. For instance, there is now a dedicated onboarding team that assists with operations, business integration, migration planning, hardware adaptation, deployment training, and more. The cinema business has evolved significantly, and a similar transformation can be observed in the complexity of the MARKUS_ software.

The ever-changing landscape of cinema technology presents continuous challenges. The most significant recent change has been the integration of self-service options, a trend accelerated by the COVID-19 pandemic. Customers now prefer to pre-order tickets and reduce in-person interactions.

MARKUS_' worldwide clientele presents a range of challenges, including adapting to diverse accounting systems, tax calculations, and even screen orientation preferences.

Customizations span from creating auditorium seating plans that cater to colorblind individuals to incorporating special features. "While in some countries you can choose a specific seat when buying a ticket, other cinemas in some regions want free seating," notes Janar, underscoring the need for flexibility in addressing unique client requirements.

There have also been interesting challenges, such as when Finland's largest cinema chain, Finnkino, ran various campaigns. "On one occasion, they premiered a James Bond film, and ticket sales started at 00:07 [12:07 am]. We had to manage the influx of users all at once to ensure the system didn't crash, requiring optimization of the website," recounts Janar.

Seamless customer experience

"Since my job is connected to the cinema, I don't feel like going to the movies much after work. However, developing cinema software is fascinating — seeing the innovations in customer service solutions at self-service kiosks or witnessing the evolution of the restaurant business. While others go to bed in the evening, I start updating the entire ticket sales server for Finland at home. A small move but with a significant impact," shares Janar.

"The most exciting aspect of my work is the continuous evolution of technology. I find satisfaction in upgrading legacy code written decades ago to meet modern standards,” says Janar, who remains at the forefront of cinema innovation, ensuring that MARKUS_ software stays ahead of the curve.

As Janar concludes, despite the behind-the-scenes complexity, the end-user experience of MARKUS_ has to remain seamless – from purchasing tickets on a mobile device to enjoying loyalty program benefits and ordering food in the cinema.

Teatru Manoel, Malta’s National Theatre, is one of the oldest working theatres in Europe. It is an exquisite example of Baroque architecture and the best-equipped performing arts venue on Malta. Markus has been efficiently servicing ticket sales for Teatru Manoel since 2011.

Before adopting Markus, Teatru Manoel used other ticketing systems, but Markus distinguished itself by offering a comprehensive data-driven approach. "If we have a problem, I send an email, and very soon it’s solved. It has always been like that. Even if Markus has fewer people, customer service has always been good," says Mangion.

Apollo Kino, the largest cinema chain in the Baltics, has been partnering with the MARKUS_ sales and automation platform since 2014. By integrating digital and self-service technologies, Apollo Kino aims to enhance every aspect of the movie-going experience, including ticketing, concessions, food and beverage sales, scheduling, and advertising.

According to Kadri Kaldma, Baltic Business Development Manager at Apollo Kino, they have always identified themselves as a cinema brand that walks its own path. In February 2016, Apollo Kino took its first steps toward digital metamorphosis. The initial phase involved integrating self-service kiosks alongside traditional cash registers, underpinned by MARKUS_' software. This phase marked the beginning of a strategic shift towards self-sufficiency for customers.

“We knew our idea was ambitious and went against the best judgment of many seasoned industry professionals. We simply wanted to create something fresh and exciting for our cinema visitors,” explained Kaldma, expressing the desire to enhance every aspect of the customer experience.

“After experiencing the initial results of the new service concept, we realized that the self-service approach had great potential. To significantly enhance our customers' sales experience, we needed to embrace a completely new mindset,” shared Kaldma.

Self-service concept

Shortly after implementing the initial self-service features, Apollo Kino began planning significant upgrades. These included developing new software and expanding kiosk screens from 13 inches to a more interactive 22 inches. Furthermore, the company introduced cash payment options to complement its digital payment solutions, along with self-service ticket gates that streamlined the entry process.

These changes necessitated a reimagining of staff roles and facilitated a shift toward a model where traditional cash registers became the exception rather than the norm.

Kaldma explained that the new technological setup inspired a renewed focus on how customers shop in the cinema’s sales area. “We needed to put more effort into the presentation and accessibility of products in the store, as well as into simplifying the payment process with the new technology. Software development was crucial in this regard,” she added.

Increased customer flow

By 2019, Apollo Kino had witnessed a dramatic shift in sales transactions away from traditional cash registers: ticket sales via regular cash registers had dropped from 33% in 2016 to just 3% by 2019, while concession sales through the same means had decreased from 36% to 6% over the same period. These shifts indicated a successful customer adaptation to the new self-service model.

The benefits of these changes were significant. Improved customer flow led to a more comfortable experience with considerably shorter waiting times. Moreover, Apollo Kino was able to expand the product selection and significantly increase labor cost efficiency.

Most notably, these operational efficiencies translated into tangible financial gains: between 2016 and 2019, there was a 17% increase in average value of concession transaction, a 29% increase in average concession sales per admission, and a 37% increase in the revenue earned per working hour.

Introduction of serviceable seats

The journey did not end there. In continued partnership with MARKUS_, Apollo Kino further refined its self-service approach by introducing serviceable seats and giving customers the option to order from built-in tablets or their smartphones.

“We wanted to elevate the cinema experience by giving customers the option to have food and drinks delivered directly to their seats without worrying about whether they had time to visit the cinema store before the screening,” said Kaldma.

This innovation not only improved the customer experience during screenings but also enabled ongoing sales throughout the screening.

The Baltic Business Development Manager at Apollo Kino reflected on the partnership, noting that MARKUS_ has been a great partner in this digital transformation journey. They valued the readiness to collaborate and occasionally lead the innovation, particularly appreciating their ability to create customized solutions.

“Looking ahead, we plan to further enhance the dine-in experience, by streamlining the entire ordering process, making it quicker and more convenient,” Kaldma shared about future cooperation plans.

Rossar noted that artificial intelligence does not replace personal interaction. "It can make this interaction faster, but currently, it does not replace it, and I hope it will not start to do so," he said. Technology can enhance service delivery by automating routine tasks, freeing staff to focus on areas where human interaction is most impactful. The challenge for businesses is to integrate technology to complement and enhance human service, not replace it.

Rossar's mention of replacing physical posters with digital displays in cinemas is a great example of how businesses are leveraging technology to capture customer attention and use automation to cut costs at the same time.

The journey toward full automation and digital transformation is fraught with challenges, from cybersecurity concerns to ensuring the sustainability of operations. "Security is a matter that needs to be dealt with from morning until the evening," marked the CEO of Apollo Digital.

As businesses adapt to these changes, the insights and examples shared during the 360° Retail Solutions 2024 seminar will undoubtedly serve as valuable guidance.

Markus's cinema software tracks the journey of film distribution in real time

On March 10, 2024, in Los Angeles, the 96th Academy Awards, also known as the Oscars, were handed out. This grand event not only highlighted the extraordinary talents within the film industry but also set the stage for global cinema distribution, including Estonia.

Cinemas require real-time updates for showtimes, seat availability, and movie details. Markus’s cinema software offers full automation of the back-of-house operations for theatrical film distribution. We have a separate system that manages when a film starts production, the dates it should be released in cinemas, and how long it will be shown.

In collaboration with the Estonian Film Institute (EFI), a valued customer, the Markus Film Manager facilitates comprehensive data integration for films distributed in Estonia.

The biggest winner of the evening was Christopher Nolan's "Oppenheimer" with seven awards. "Poor Things" received four awards, while "The Interest Zone" was decorated with two Oscars.
